Yes, We Must Pray for Our Enemies

I was awakened this morning at about 3:23am by a dream that I had. The dream, which was very vivid, was about two of my enemies. So, as I lay awake, instead of praying after having just woken up, I instead just laid there and replayed in my mind the horrible things that those two individuals that I dreamt about did to me (they jeopardized my life and more). That led me to being filled with feelings of resentment all over again, even though I had already forgiven these individuals over a month ago (they do not know that I forgave them, as I do not speak to them, and I still consider them my enemies because if you are not for me, then you are against me).

As I continued to recall all the pain and havoc that these two enemies caused in my life, I then grappled with the question of why I even had to dream about them in the first place, to then wake up and be in a sour mood. I was wondering why my dream couldn’t be about someone I was fond of and a pleasant experience. And it was at that moment that God intervened and spoke to me and told me to pray for those two individuals (my enemies).

‘Pray for them’, I repeated to myself. And of course I was obedient to God’s very clear instructions. However, in order for me to enter into prayer mode with my whole heart and mind and spirit, I had to first pray for myself and ask God to search my heart… to examine it and remove everything from it that was not of Him, which included resentment (which had resurfaced due to the dream that I had), and other negative feelings (which also resulted from the dream).

What I did next was tell myself again that I forgive those two individuals for what they did to me (even though I never got an apology and will most likely never receive one).

We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love.

- Martin Luther King Jr.

Afterwards, I was able to pray for them and I did. I prayed a real deep and sincere prayer for them as opposed to praying a generic prayer out of obligation/just to please God and have my prayer constitute my obedience to Him.

Yes friends, we must forgive our enemies and pray for them. The Word of God requires us to do so (see all scriptures below). We are to love our enemies too.

We must be obedient to God’s Word and the instructions that He gives us at any given time. Doing both is the measure of real discipleship.
